The following blog is a home for all the books, movies, or TV shows I study to unravel how experts structure their romance or romcom stories, all in the hopes that I can learn something from them to improve my own craft, (because they are who I want to be when I grow up!)
As I read, I will note how each chapter helps to move the plot along, and the structure it follows. All this while I try to withhold turning this into a review. It is not.
I will compare my findings to classic story structures for romance/romcoms genre and see if the works follow them, and how closes they follow them. For this I may use the Save the Cat beat sheets or another story structure entirely. Then, once the comparison is done, I might discuss which elements were true to the expected structure and which elements deviated from the expected. I’ll also mention which elements worked and which elements missed the mark for me. Thus, these posts will be biased as my own personal experiences, background, understanding, and knowledge will no doubt influence what I connect with and how etc.
For transparency’s sake, I’m a POC, a female, a migrant, a teacher, a new mum, a wife, and I can attribute my early years and learnings to having grown up in three different countries.
I will be sharing the story breakdowns here in truncated form before discussing its structural norms and/or differences. (I may share the extended notes on my Kofi page later on). As such, these studies contain spoilers. DO NOT READ if you are someone who hates spoilers. Go and read/watch the story I’m about to break down before you venture to this page and see what I found or if I missed something in these stories (which may happen. I’m only human after all.)
Alas, lets have some fun (in a totally nerdy way!)
